In addition to our culinary worldschooling, the kids homeschooling curriculum when we’re back home in Hawaii includes learning about our nation’s history. When I mentioned the possibility of road tripping to Gettysburg this summer, Lou Lou immediately asked if we’d get to visit the Gettysburg Battlefield!

In case you’re wondering because I certainly was – you definitely can! The site of the Battle of Gettysburg is now part of the National Park Service. They even host living history programs where Civil War living historians encamp on the battlefield – sounds like we found the perfect summer homeschooling field trip. 🙂

Battlefield aside, Gettysburg is also an emerging foodie destination, which is music to our foodie-loving ears. It’s the top producer of apples in Pennsylvania, ranking #4 in the USA, and the countryside outside the historic town is filled with apple orchards, where one can go apple picking (we’re huge fans of picking your own produce, read all about it here.

In addition to apples and fresh produce from farmer’s markets, the town has a vibrant farm-to-table scene, with restaurants crafting their menus around locally-sourced meats and ingredients.

Go here if you’re looking to try some grass-fed pasture raised pork, chickens, lamb, and eggs from the local Rettland Farm. Best of all, it’s BYOB for the parents!

Food 101

A new addition to the Gettysburg dining scene, Food 101 serves up dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients at small tables or if you prefer, communal dining. The restaurant’s BYOB, so make sure to stop by the quaint wine store right opposite before you head to dinner with the family. Everything’s made to order, and the chef’s have been known to whip up things that aren’t on the menu.

The Battlefield location is perfect after a day soaking in the sights and historical sounds of Gettysburg.
